Herbstferien in Berlin

It's amazing that it's been 25 years since I was last in Berlin as an exchange student.  I've wanted to go back ever since and last week, during the kids' Fall break we finally were able to go.

In January of 1987 I was able to visit Berlin as a guest of the German Government and had a great, cold, and weird time.  The city was divided by a wall.  The Cold War was in full swing.  There was pressure everywhere in the city....at least the part that I was able to stay in...West Berlin.  I spent the day in East Berlin and had a very memorable experience...guards, towers, Plattenbau (large East Block housing complexes), and bare shelves in every store I entered.

Needless to say it's 'a city different' (to borrow a phrase from New Mexico).  We had a great time, were able to see many things; went to the zoo, visited Potsdam and the Sansouci palace, went on a river cruise, visited the German Parliament building, and found several great playgrounds....we'll look forward to our next visit!
