Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, St. Avold, France
May 27, 2012
We decided to make a day trip for Memorial Day Weekend to the Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France. It's about 2.5 hours from Stuttgart and an easy trip with kids. They had a ceremony today in honor of Memorial Day complete with choir, band, flyover, and plenty of sunshine.
There is something special about visiting an American cemetery in a foreign country. The site is every bit as reverent and beautiful as the ones in the US, but knowing that the soldiers fought right on the soil on which we were sitting makes it more real to me. We looked up this Medal of Honor winner after we returned home and the kids enjoyed hearing one solider's story.
Lots of places to walk for the busy two-year-old.
This is the chapel. Inside are huge maps that showed the Allied advance from the D-Day invasion to the end of the war.
There were over 10,400 soldiers buried here. It's the largest American cemetery in Europe.
